Whoever keeps the word of Christ,
the love of God is truly perfected in him. ( 1 John 2:5)
Today’s readings talk about Hypocrisy and Obedience. Hypocrisy is pretence or acting as virtuous or good. In today’s World, this behaviour is very common and followed by majority of people. An artificial smile, coded good words, artificial appreciation and acting as good and showing off so on are the signs of hypocrisy. The real obedient people who follow the Word of God, do it in action and this act may not be appreciated or make us not to smile and may face persecutions and even death. The reward of obedience to the Word of God is peace and joy within ourselves and this joy we get from the Working of the Holy Spirit. This Working of the Holy Spirit builds a ministry with in the Community due to our obedience of the Word of God.
Why do People pretend that they are obedient when they are not ? St. Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians gives the answer : you received it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who believe.
When people receive the Word of God as Words of men , they compare God to man and thus the God’s value has been under estimated and the essence of God’s Word which is truth and Spirit has been misinterpreted to the selfishness of false beliefs. This state of belief is very dangerous because the person assumes he is right in his belief where as he or she is completely on the opposite side i.e. disbelief or disobedience. This is one kind of Spiritual sickness which can come to people who are intelligent, paper tigers and Walking Bibles. This sickness is contagious and pass on from one generation to the next because of its elite kind of nature. These elite Christians focus on the word of God and it’s flaws and obligations and miss the point of obedience. The Catholic church balances the spirituality with Acts of mercy a, works of charity with sacraments which helps to overcome the self-righteousness and disobedience or hypocrisy. The Hypocrites are militants and violent people where the word of God is not working in their life. When they are exposed of their hypocrisy they show their true self of violence and murder the Prophets or righteous people to protect their Hypocrisy. This is a evil generation which Jesus talking about in the Gospel. There are plenty in our churches and society today. There is a need to purify these people with the fire of the Holy Spirit and Jesus is that fire who will send his spirit of love. This fire will burn every spirit of Hypocrisy and put a spirit of obedience to hear and follow the word of God to be perfect to the love of God .
